Democratic Challenger John Delany Believes in the 6th District

John Delaney is the son of a union electrician.  Since graduating from Columbia University and Georgetown Law School, he has been devoted to building businesses, creating jobs and leading the way in non-profit community improvement projects.  John believes that the government has an important role to play in ensuring that individuals get the training they need to innovate.  He believes that the benefits of a healthy economy are shared among all Americans including labor, reduce the gap between the rich and the poor and help rebuild the middle class.  Part of a healthy economy is a government focus on the energy sector, protecting vital social programs by balancing the budget with a spending cuts and revenue enhancements and investing in important transportation and communication infrastructure.  John supports the Dream Act and believes government should promote small business growth and encourage community banks to lend to small business.  John believes in the federal government prioritizing grants to promote “green energy” jobs and reduce the U.S. dependence on fossil fuels.  Mr. Delaney supports the Affordable Care Act and believes that digitizing medical records can save billions of dollars in the health care industry.  Finally, John support supporting an increase in Pell Grants to make access to higher education and technical training affordable.   He supports incentives to attract top college students into the teaching profession, real evaluations, balanced testing of students and an increase in the emphasis on the development of “soft skills” (interview skills, communication and public speaking skills) in young people entering the workforce.

Republican Roscoe Bartlett Is A Different Kind of Congressman

Roscoe Barltett considers himself and citizen-legislator. Having excelled at various professions - professor, research scientist and inventor, small business owner, and farmer, he has been the Maryland 6th District's Congressman since 1992.  Roscoe Bartlett believes that government should create a business environment conducive to entrepreneurial risk-taking.  That means lower taxes, less business regulation, and a balanced federal budget.  These policies would let Americans, not government, do what they do best – innovate and create new jobs.  Reigning in government spending is a high priority and part of that plan is controlling health care costs. Repealing expensive Obamacare and replacing its individual mandate with free-market solutions like expanding health savings accounts and ending outlandish mal-practice lawsuits can save billions from our healthcare costs.  As Chair of the Tactical Air and Land Forces Subcommittee, Rep. Bartlett is committed to keeping our armed forces strong with providing excellent training, equipment and whatever support is necessary.  Finally, Rep. Bartlett is one Congresses strongest supporters for law-abiding citizens to have the right to own and possess a firearm.  He has been endorsed by the National Rifle Association.

Civil Marriage Protection Act

Voting for this referendum would change Maryland’s civil marriage laws to allow same-sex couples to obtain a civil marriage license. This also establishes that clergy are protected from having to perform a marriage ceremony in violation of their religious beliefs and declares that every religion has control of who may marry within their faith.

Congressional Redistricting in Maryland

States have one representative in the House of Representatives for each congressional district. Congressional redistricting is the re-creation of the congressional district boundary lines.  Redistricting is done every ten years, based on the results of the national census, by state legislatures, and then can be modified by Congress. In 2011, Governor Martin O’Malley proposed a redistricting plan that has not been very popular within the state. Some citizens started a petition to have the plan put up for referendum, and once they got enough signatures, the issue was added to the ballot. Now, like in a true democracy, the people can make their voices heard by voting for or against the governor’s redistricting plan.
